The Discipline of Finishing: Lessons for Leaders in 2024 and Beyond
All too often the concept of “starting” is celebrated. I get it! As a entrepreneur, I understand the importance of seeing your ideas go from concept to a real life business. So we applaud those who innovate, start something new, and implement those ambitious plans they’ve been sitting on for years.
But what about the end? What about “Finishing.” The definition of finishing is to complete something or come to the end of an activity.
Finishing strong is where it all counts. Yes completing the project or activity is critical, but there’s more to finishing. As a leader, it’s not just about crossing the finish line but about the responsibility to make the effort matter—for yourself and for others.
Finishing is an act of service, creating clarity and capacity for you first, than for those around you. It’s a reminder that how we end things shapes trust, strengthens relationships, and sets the tone for what comes next.
The finish line often gets less attention, yet it’s where transformation truly happens. Finishing is about growth, discipline, and commitment to seeing things through.
Ok, allow me to share two moments in my life brought this into sharp focus. Both taught me powerful lessons about why finishing matters and how it shapes us as leaders.
The Medicine Bottle
Several years ago, my daughter had a painful ear infection. As typical here in the U.S. our doctor prescribed amoxicillin, a common antibiotic, and gave us one clear instruction: finish the bottle. Even if she started feeling better halfway through, we were told to complete the course.
I remember asking, “Why is it necessary to finish if the infection seems to be gone?” The doctor explained that while the visible symptoms might disappear early, the infection could linger below the surface. Stopping too soon might allow the bacteria to adapt, leading to a stronger, more resistant strain.
My mind was blown away by his explanation. It got me thinking about starting something and actually finishing it.
The wisdom in that advice stayed with me. How often do we, as leaders, stop short of finishing because things seem good enough?
Maybe we stop pushing a project when it feels “good enough” or avoid that last difficult conversation because the team dynamic seems fine. But unfinished work can resurface as bigger problems—challenges that could have been resolved if we had just seen things through.
Please get this! Finishing ensures thoroughness. It’s not just about completing a task but preventing future setbacks and building a inner culture of persistence.
The Gym Challenge
More recently, I found myself at the gym, facing a tough workout designed by my coach. A group of us were given one exercise at a time with no clear end in sight. The only rule?
If you stopped mid-exercise, you were done for the day.
As the workout progressed, people began to drop out. Eventually, it was just me and one other person. When they couldn’t finish the next exercise, I assumed I had “won.” Exhausted but relieved, I thought the challenge was over.
But the coach wasn’t done with me yet. He shouted out another exercise. Then another. My fatigue turned into frustration, and on the very last exercise, I gave up.
When I asked why he didn’t stop me earlier, he pointed to the workout plan. I was one exercise away from completing the entire session—50 different exercises. I was so pissed at myself. I gave up right before the end.
The lesson hit me hard. Finishing isn’t just physical; it’s mental. It’s about pushing through discomfort and silencing the voice that says, “This is good enough.”
Please get this! In leadership, finishing requires us to go beyond what’s expected, even when the end seems invisible or unreachable.
Why Leaders Struggle to Finish?
To be very honest - leadership is full of unfinished work. Initiatives get sidelined, difficult conversations go unsaid, and long-term strategies lose momentum. Why?
The Illusion of 'Good Enough': We convince ourselves that progress is sufficient when the truth is, we’ve left things unresolved.
Discomfort Avoidance: The hardest work often comes at the end, when we’re most tempted to quit. Please click to read this post about my grandson and the pain of growth.
Lack of Immediate Gratification: Finishing doesn’t always offer an instant payoff, making it easy to deprioritize. This is probably the most difficult for me to deal with. I’m writing a book, and while I love what I’m writing, it doesn’t provide the immediate gratification or sense of completion that this newsletter gives me.
The Cost of Not Finishing
Unfinished work has real consequences:
Problems resurface. Like a partially treated infection, unresolved issues can come back stronger.
Missed opportunities. The most valuable growth often happens in the final stretch.
Lost trust. Teams look to leaders who model persistence and discipline; stopping short erodes credibility.
Close out 2024 strong and start 2025 with a finishing mentality
As we head into a new year, here’s why finishing should be your focus:
Think Beyond the Moment: Whether it’s closing out a project or finally signing up for the coaching you’ve put on the back burner, finishing builds resilience and momentum.
Embrace the Last 10%: The hardest part is where growth happens. It’s where leaders prove their commitment to excellence.
Finish to Finish: Reframe your mindset. The goal isn’t to “do enough” but to see things through, even when it’s hard.
2025 is here! Ask yourself: What have you left unfinished?
Is it a project?
A strategy?
A conversation?
Take one of those lingering tasks and commit to finishing it before the year ends.
Believe me, I can tell you from my daily experience - finishing isn’t easy, but this mindset has truly transformed my life and those around me.
Please get this! It’s our responsibility to model this discipline—for ourselves first and than for others.
SEE YOU AT THE TOP!
Most leaders are tired of being unseen, passed over, or just plain neglected. A high percentage of leaders want to grow and desire to be developed at a higher level.
However, their company only provides them with the resources and content relevant to their company.
This creates a generation of limited, boxed-in leaders with narrow leadership perspectives. As a result, they are unable to explore new ideas and methodologies that could propel them and their teams forward.
Here’s the thing: leadership is not one-size-fits-all.
True growth happens when leaders are exposed to diverse perspectives, cutting-edge practices, and a supportive community that challenges them to think outside the box.
It’s about breaking free from the confines of conventional corporate training and embracing a holistic approach to leadership development.
