What’s your One Word for 2024?
Leaders lack discipline when it comes to discipline. Here’s why.
“What gets your attention gets your focus; what gets your focus gets done.”
Every year I choose ONE word for the year. I started the process of discovering my word for 2024.
I think I have it. But I need to make sure. I’ll let you know once I made a decision.
“Steve, what’s the big deal, pick a word and move on.” Sounds simple.
But your words are powerful. Typically, once I discover my word I tell my inner circle so they can hold me accountable for the year.
My word for 2023 was “Greater.” My 2023 by all accounts was an amazing year.
I found myself doing Greater work. Establishing Greater relationships.
Accomplishing Great things that all aligned with my purpose and vision.
I stretched myself much further than any other year.
As a result, I was able to create an overflow of perspective, leadership resources, and relationships and began carving out my own unique space in my market.
Your words matter! I’m curious if you have chosen ONE word for 2024.
If so put it in the comments. We can all use a little accountability to help us accomplish Greater things.
One word can change your life!
Ok, I know my word.
My word for 2024 is DISCIPLINE!
I know right, that’s what I thought - it’s a tough one.
Yes, the word discipline is a word that most try to avoid because it has negative connotations. I’ve realized the more generic my goals the less discipline I have exhibited.
So the first step with discipline is to clearly define your goals.
Because at its core it means you have to give something up. You have to cut out waste. Oh, and I like some waste - those things that give me a dopamine hit, some tasks that lead to nowhere when I should be concentrating on the details.
If done properly, discipline can help you remove distractions and maintain consistency and intent toward your specific goals.
Also, the one phrase that trips more leaders up is “self-control” which requires sacrifices in the present for future rewards.
For me it means I have to give up certain things, things that don't add value or move me forward.
My daughter asked me, “What specific actions are you trying to discipline? How does it show up for you in 2024?”
My response was K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Steve!
I know simple isn’t sexy. It’s boring! Simplicity can seem uneventful, but it’s oh-so-necessary.
Let me ask you a question.
Which is easier?
Pushing one car at a time or trying to push four cars at the same time towards the finish line?
Second question.
If you were to push four cars simultaneously to maximize your productivity, which car would you start pushing first, and for how long would you dedicate your effort before moving on to the next one?
My thought is to pack as many essentials into one car and push that car as swiftly as I can, as hard as I can to the finish line.
Well, at least the plan for 2024.
WHAT NEXT!
Three steps to help you find your Word!
Remove yourself!
Get away from the noise and distractions of life, and create an environment to look inward, quiet your mind, and really listen to your heart.
I know it may sound like something from a Lifetime Channel movie. But it works, trust me.
Then ask yourself these three questions, and write your insights here:
1. What do I need?
2. What’s in my way?
3. What needs to go?
